Kate* grew up in Oxford and was a late developer. She began writing when her son went to university, to stop herself trailing around pathetically and missing him. The idea for Blaggard’s School for Tomorrow’s Tyrants, also known as Gangster School, originated with her son, who used to tell people that when he grew up he wanted to be an evil genius. Now he’s teaching in Taiwan, so the World seems to be safe.
Kate did all sorts of jobs before becoming a writer, including working in a library, events organising and mopping up sick in a nursery. She went to university at the ripe old age of 38, achieving a first class degree in English and Creative Writing. She followed that with a Masters, and only then felt equipped to do what she really wanted to do: write for children.
When she isn’t writing, Kate loves mudlarking – searching the foreshore of the Thames in London for treasures. She is a licensed mudlark and is currently writing a series of books about a pair of Victorian mudlarks whose finds lead them into some very perilous adventures.
